Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS)Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) belongs to rheumatism, is a kind of seronegative spondyloarthropathies, and is closely related to HLA-B27. It is a chronic, autoimmune disease because of the pathological changes of the spine, and the changes involve sacroiliac joints and lead to spine rigid and fibrillation, and cause changes on the eye, lung, muscle and bone in different levels.

Pathogeny of Ankylosing Spondylitis

  • 1.Genes: this disease is closely related to the genes.
  • 2.Infection: urogenital system is one of the most important factors to cause this disease.
  • 3.Endocrine dyscrasia and metabolic disturbance.
  • 4.Other factors: age, constitution/ malnutrition, climate, natural environment, dampness and cold.

Clinical Manifestation of Ankylosing Spondylitis

This disease is usually seen in young people of 16-30 years old, especially in male. Patient whose first onset is after 40 years old is rarely seen. At first the symptoms are rather mild and slowly developed.

In the early phase the patients usually suffered from pain on the lower back and morning stiffness which will relief after exercises, along with symptoms as low-grade fever, fatigue, anorexia and emaciation. Some patients may supervene with iritis, and activities which increase abdominal pressure as sneezing will increase pain. At first it is intermittent pain, and after months and years it will develop into persistent pain. At last the inflammatory pain will gone, and from bottom to top, part or all of spine will stiffen and form Kyphosis deformity.

The female patient’s joints around spine are usually affected by the disease, and the disease is slowly developed, spine deformity is rather mild.
