Till the end of 2016, our department has treated 1097 patients of stroke (including cerebral hemorrhage and cerebral thrombosis) sequela. Among these patients, the longest onset time is 19 years, and the shortest is one month (only few patients). The improvement rate of stroke (including cerebral hemorrhage and cerebral thrombosis) sequela is 88%. Many patients have a certain degree of improvement even when they were in hospital, and the improvement shows on：
1）lower muscular tension
2）increase of muscle force
3）better sensation of body
4）better blood circulation of distal limbs
5）better motor function and fexibilities
6) better pronunciation and facial expression
According to our clinical experience, factors such as the age of patient, length of disease time, severity of cerebral hemorrhage and cerebral thrombosis, controlling to complications as hypertension and diabetes, and condition of body function can influence the treatment effect. Normally, the shorter course of disease, the better therapeutic effect would be. More and more patients who suffered from cerebral hemorrhage or cerebral thrombosis received transplantation one or two months after onset, and the effect of treatment will show up several days after surgery.
At present, our department is trying to apply stem cell transplantation to treat cerebrovasucular disease sequela in acute stage and recovery stage. The animal experiments confirmed that using stem cell transplantation in acute stage and recovery stage can save a large amount of nerve cells around the cerebral injured area (ischemic penumbra), and restore their neurological function, hence reduce the disability rate and handicapped degree. Once the patient passed recovery stage and get into sequela stage, the best treating time is gone, and nerve cells around ischemic penumbra start dying, then some hard and dense glial scars which obstruct nerve regeneration will be formed around the injured area. It will be much more difficult to treat the disease then.
Stem cell transplantation leads to a new way to treat cerebrovasucular disease sequela which further improved patient’s neurological function. The effect of treatment would be even better if patients practice proper and systematic functional rehabilitation excises after the transplantation. We will keep doing further research and study to improve our treatment effect and help as many patients as we can.
