Dr. Zhongcheng Wang was born in Yantai, Shandong province, passed away on Oct 10th, 2012. He graduated from Peking University, School of Medicine. He was an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, the director of Beijing Neurosurgery Research Institute, and the honorary president of Beijing Tiantan Hospital. Professor Zhongcheng is one of the pioneers of the Chinese Neurosurgery industry. He was the first to put the technology of Cerebral Angiography into practice within China in the 1950s, which largely improved the diagnosis rate of cerebral diseases. Professor Zhongcheng also published the first Chinese specialized works of neurosurgery – Cerebral Angiography.
Professor Zhongcheng is the first to apply micro-neurosurgery technology into the treatment, which helps him to successfully operate on thousands of intra-cranial aneurysms. It reduces the death rate of intra-cranial aneurysms surgery from over 10% to below 2%. In addition, he made some new achievements in the treatment of Ischemic Cerebrovascular diseases with anastomosis of blood vessel and cerebrovascular malformation.
His two greatest research achievements are on pathological changes of the brain stem and the basic research and clinical treatment of Intromedullary Spinal Cord Tumor which reached the international advanced level. The scientific research team led by Professor Zhongcheng made 66 scientific achievements, 8 of which were awarded each with a national prize. The team has also published over 290 thesis and 20 monographs. A large group of neurosurgery specialists are educated by Professor Zhongcheng including masters and post-doctors.
